Science Engagement and Outreach are crucial components of my life as a scientist.
I am involved in a variety of offline science engagement activities; some links are below. I have been profiled and interviewed for a number of popular science magazines, and I will try to eventually link to all of these here as well. I have started to write for The Conversation Africa. Very occasionally, I even tweet under the handle welt_woman.
I am a member of the South African Academy of Sciences and I served on the Executive for 2014/2015. In this capacity, I have been involved in a number of exciting projects. I am particularly proud of the two below.
As part of the Global STEM Alliance, SAYAS have teamed up with the New York Academy of Sciences for a Clinton Global Initiative, the 1000 Girls, 1000 Futures programme. I am one of the SAYAS coordinators of this programme, serving as a mentor and a member ambassador for the New York Academy of Sciences.
In 2015, I teamed up with the indomitable Jonathan Shock to launch Mathemafrica.org. Our goal is to raise awareness of mathematics in Africa and of African mathematics and mathematicians.
